Achilles, ankle & foot pain: physiotherapy at Hauora, Primrose Hill

(01) The injury

Achilles tendon pain, sprained ankles and heel pain (often called plantar fasciitis) are among the most common problems we see. They affect runners, people who are on their feet all day and those who have recently become more active. Many of these problems linger because they are rested and then overloaded again. The right diagnosis and a gradual loading plan usually break that cycle.

You might notice

  1. 01Pain and stiffness in the Achilles, especially first thing in the morning
  2. 02Sharp pain under the heel when you first stand up
  3. 03An ankle that feels weak or keeps rolling
  4. 04Swelling around the ankle after activity
  5. 05Pain that warms up during exercise and returns afterwards

Common causes

  1. 01Increasing walking, running or sport too quickly
  2. 02Previous ankle sprains that were not fully rehabbed
  3. 03Calf weakness or stiffness
  4. 04Footwear changes or long hours standing
  5. 05Age-related changes in tendons

(02) How we treat it

How we work on achilles, ankle & foot pain.

Treatment at Hauora for achilles, ankle & foot pain
At the Hauora clinic, At The Core, Primrose Hill
  1. 01Stage 1

    Get the right diagnosis

Not all Achilles, heel or ankle pain is the same, so we start by finding exactly what it is.

  2. 02Stage 2

    Settle and manage load

Adjust running and daily activity so the tendon or ankle can calm down without total rest.

  3. 03Stage 3

    Progressive loading

A step-by-step strength programme for the calf, tendon and foot, plus balance work for ankles.

  4. 04Stage 4

    Back to running and jumping

A graded return to the activity that matters to you.

Your plan can include

  • An accurate diagnosis, because not all heel or Achilles pain is the same
  • A tendon loading programme that builds strength step by step
  • Balance and strength work to stop ankles giving way
  • Advice on footwear, activity and running
  • Hands-on treatment and taping to ease pain

Recovery

Tendon problems usually take around three months of consistent loading to improve properly. Ankle sprains often recover in a few weeks, but rehab is important to stop them happening again.

(03) Your team

Elite-level care, on your case.

The people who have looked after Premier League footballers and Premiership rugby players will look after you. Same standards, same attention to detail, whatever brings you in.

(04) What to expect

Your first appointment.

01

We listen

Your first appointment lasts an hour with a senior physiotherapist. We start by understanding your symptoms, your history, your work and what you want to get back to.

02

We find the cause

A thorough hands-on assessment of how you move, so we treat the cause and not just where it hurts.

03

You leave with a plan

You will understand what is wrong, how long it should take, and exactly what to do next, including treatment and exercises to start straight away.

(05) Questions

Good questions.

Should I rest my Achilles?+

Complete rest usually does not fix tendon pain. Tendons get better with the right amount of load, built up gradually. We will guide you on how much is right.

Do I need insoles?+

Sometimes, but not always. Strength and load management are usually more important. We will tell you if insoles are likely to help.
